“Reducing friction” has become a widespread strategic goal for user experience initiatives as companies in a variety of industries are trying to create seamless, painless, and effortless experiences for their users. In the noble pursuit of usability, designers are pressured to ruthlessly eradicate those pesky moments when interfaces stand between users and their goals. The talk concludes with recent examples illustrating creative uses of friction in modern design, and with recommendations that will inspire attendees to bravely experiment with friction in their design work.
