Session Survey

It’s not very hard to find UX roles right now. We’re in a period where every company at a minimum, knows they “need some UX” and some don’t have a clue what that means. So, while it’s not hard to find a company looking for UX, finding the right role for you might seem daunting. It’s very difficult to find the right job in today’s UX landscape. UX has become more than a buzzword; it’s turned into a catchall for innovation, disruption, transformation, and all the other corporate buzzwords being used interchangeably for successful, relevant, or valuable. We find the terms UX Designer, CX Designer, Service Designer, and Product Designer to be interchangeable with no reference to which part of the experience and/or product this role will manage. We find a magnitude of titles like UI/UX Designer, UX/UI Designer, UX Product Designer, Information Architect, Interaction Designer, UX Architect, UX Strategist, UX Researcher, User Researcher, UX Research Strategist, UX & Strategy Product Designer, and my favorite UI/UX Design Engineer (you mean Front-End Developer?). The list of UX related titles seems never-ending and it comes down to nomenclature and semantics, right? No, it doesn’t. We can learn a lot from the people and companies who post these roles and their understanding of what it is that we do, and you can also learn from me.

In this talk, I’ll navigate the current landscape of UX roles by walking you through my most recent and past experiences interviewing and searching for different roles. I’ll discuss my own design experiences along with successes and failed attempts at landing the right roles. I’ll go through my experiences interviewing at companies locally and around the country, experiences with recruiters, and I’ll share my overall tips and opinions on landing the right job for you.

I made a personal pivot and decided to stop focusing on how to build a product, to focusing on how to build the right product... Read More →
